BOOK AWARD 2024

The Greek- Australian Cultural League is announcing the Book Awards for books written by authors active and residing in Australia. The books may be written in Greek or English, bilingual or translations. The GACL Book Prize 2024 will cover books published in the years 2022, 2023.

Only books submitted by their authors or translators will be judged. The authors are requested to use the appropriate application form posted on the GACL website and submit three (3) copies of each book before Friday 12 July 2024. In the case of bilingual publications, it is up to the author to designate the language of the publication that they wish to submit for consideration. The publications will not be returned.

The number of prizes is limited to ten, one in each category and each language, provided there is a book worthy of a prize. The categories are:

(a) Poetry
(b) Prose
(c) Theatrical play
(d) History/Study; and
(e) Book for children

The prize in each category consists of:

Monetary amount and we are looking for sponsors to support us.
Certificate and a gift.

The announcement of the results will be organized at a special function towards the end of the year.

Ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος διοργανώνει τον ετήσιο Λογοτεχνικό Διαγωνισμό, που έχει καθιερωθεί πλέον ως θεσμός στα πολιτιστικά και λογοτεχνικά δρώμενα της ομογένειας στην Αυστραλία.

Ο Λογοτεχνικός Διαγωνισμός καλύπτει έργα γραμμένα στην Ελληνική ή Αγγλική γλώσσα, στις κατηγορίες: ποίηση και διήγημα, από συγγραφείς που διαμένουν στην Αυστραλία και να είναι ηλικίας άνω των 18 ετών.

Η συμμετοχή στον Λογοτεχνικό διαγωνισμό είναι ανοικτή στα μέλη και στους υποστηρικτές του ΕΑΠΣ. Με τη συμμετοχή όλων μας θα αναβαθμιστεί ο θεσμός και θα δοθεί η δυνατότητα σε όσο το δυνατό περισσότερα συμμετέχοντα άτομα να παρουσιάσουν αδημοσίευτες εργασίες τους στο ευρύτερο κοινό. Φέτος η προθεσμία υποβολής έργων για συμμετοχή στον Διαγωνισμό λήγει την Παρασκευή 28 Ιουνίου, 2024.

Ο Διαγωνισμός καλύπτει έργα γραμμένα στην Eλληνική ή Αγγλική γλώσσα ή δίγλωσσα στις κατηγορίες: ποίηση και διήγημα από συγγραφείς που δραστηριοποιούνται στην Αυστραλία και είναι ηλικίας άνω των 18 ετών.
Άτομα που επιθυμούν να λάβουν μέρος στον Διαγωνισμό παρακαλούνται να συμπληρώσουν την αίτηση εγγραφής στην ιστοσελίδα του Ελληνο-Αυστραλιακού Πολιτιστικού Συλλόγου (www.gacl.org.au).
Η αξιολόγηση θα είναι διαφορετική για την κάθε γλώσσα.
Τα υποβαλλόμενα έργα θα πρέπει να είναι συντακτικά και ορθογραφικά διορθωμένα.
Οι συμμετέχοντες μπορούν να λάβουν μέρος σε μια ή όλες τις κατηγορίες και σε μία ή και στις δύο γλώσσες, με ένα μόνο έργο στην κάθε κατηγορία.
Έργα που ξεπερνούν τα καθορισμένα για κάθε κατηγορία όρια μεγέθους, όπως παρουσιάζονται παρακάτω, θα απορρίπτονται αυτομάτως πριν καν σταλούν στην Kριτική Eπιτροπή.
Όρια: Ποίημα 100 στίχοι (γραμμές), Διήγημα 2000 λέξεις.
Κάθε έργο πρέπει να είναι αυθεντικό και να μην έχει δημοσιευθεί ή προωθηθεί σε άλλους φορείς.
Κάθε έργο θα υπογράφεται μόνο με ψευδώνυμο και το ίδιο ψευδώνυμο πρέπει να χρησιμοποιηθεί για όλα τα έργα που υποβάλλονται από το ίδιο πρόσωπο.
Κάθε έργο πρέπει να αποσταλεί (Word document attachment) αποκλειστικά στην ηλεκτρονική διεύθυνση gaclitcomp@gmail.com. Στην ίδια διεύθυνση, και με τον ίδιο τρόπο αλλά σε ξεχωριστό κείμενο, θα πρέπει να αποσταλούν και τα προσωπικά στοιχεία εκείνων που θα πάρουν μέρος στον διαγωνισμό, που θα περιλαμβάνουν το ψευδώνυμο, το ονοματεπώνυμο, τη διεύθυνση, το email και τηλέφωνό τους, καθώς και τον αριθμό στίχων για τα ποιήματα, και λέξεων για τα διηγήματα.
Το Πρώτο Βραβείο σε κάθε κατηγορία και σε κάθε γλώσσα θα είναι ένα αναμνηστικό δίπλωμα και μια επιταγή χρηματικού ποσού. Στο Δεύτερο και Τρίτο Βραβείο καθώς και στους Επαίνους (αν υπάρχουν) θα απονεμηθούν τιμητικά διπλώματα και βιβλία.
· Τα έργα που θα πάρουν το Πρώτο Βραβείο σε κάθε κατηγορία και στην κάθε μια από τις δύο γλώσσες θα δημοσιευθούν στο περιοδικό Αντίποδες, τεύχος 70, 2024.

LITERARY COMPETITION 2024

The Greek-Australian Cultural League is announcing this year’s Literary Competition. This Competition is now an established annual event in the cultural and literary scene of the Greek community in Australia.

The Literary Competition includes works written in the Greek or English language, by writers residing in Australia and over 18 years of age, in the following categories: Poetry and Short story.

With the participation of all of us, the Literary Competition will be upgraded through reaching the widest pool of writers in Australia and, it will give to all our members and friends the opportunity to present their unpublished works to a wider audience. Please submit your works by Friday 28th June 2024.

The winning entries in each category in each language will be published in Issue No. 70, 2024 of the annual bilingual periodicals of the GACL, ANTIPODES. The results of the Literary Competition will be announced at a special function to be determined later in the year.

2024 LITERARY COMPETITION RULES

The Literary Competition covers work written in either Greek or English or bilingual in the following categories: poetry and short stories, by writers who are residents in Australia and over the age of 18.
Participants are required to complete a registration form on the Greek-Australian Cultural League website (www.gacl.org.au)
The adjudication will be separate for each language.
Participants may submit work in one or all the categories and in one or both languages, with only one piece in each category they choose.
Submissions with many grammatical and syntactical mistakes will be rejected.
Works that do not comply with the limits of content, as prescribed below, will be automatically rejected and will not be forwarded to the Judging Panel.
Content limits: Poem: 100 verses (lines); Short story: 2000 words.
All submissions should be the original work(s) of the authors and should not have been submitted in another competition or have been previously published.
Each work submitted should be signed by a pseudonym (nom de plume) and the same pseudonym should be used in signing all the entries submitted by the same person.
Each competition entry should be sent only electronically (Word document attachment) to the competition email address: gaclitcomp@gmail.com. Additionally, in a separate text sent to the same email address, participants are required to forward their particulars, including the pseudonym, the full name, address, email and telephone numbers and also, the number of verses in their poems and number of words in their short stories.
The First Prize in each category and in each language will be awarded a commemorative certificate and a monetary prize. The Second and Third Prizes and any Commendations will have a relevant award certificate and books as a gift.
In all categories and languages, the works awarded First Prize will be published in the 70th issue of the periodical Antipodes.

ΠΕΡΙΟΔΙΚΟ «ΑΝΤΙΠΟΔΕΣ» Τεύχος 70, 2024

Φέτος είμαστε στην ευχάριστη θέση να γιορτάσουμε τα 51 χρόνια συνεχούς κυκλοφορίας του περιοδικού «Αντίποδες». Η παρουσίαση του θα γίνει την Κυριακή 20 Οκτωβρίου, 2024. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες εγκαίρως.

Το περιοδικό φέτος θα είναι αφιερωμένο στην Κύπρο. Αυτή η ειδική έκδοση θα συμπεριλάβει διάφορες απόψεις για το νησί της Αφροδίτης οι οποίες μαρτυρούν την μαγεία του νησιού, την ιδιαιτερότητα, και την αντοχή του Κυπριακού λαού ανά τους αιώνες. Πενήντα χρόνια έχουν περάσει από την εισβολή του νησιού και την συνεχή αυθαίρετη κατοχή, η οποία συνεχίζει να συζητείται με κανένα θετικό αποτέλεσμα.

Το τεύχος αυτό θα περιλαμβάνει έργα λογοτεχνών και καλλιτεχνών-μελών του Συνδέσμου μας. Οι λογοτεχνικές συμμετοχές των μελών μας στην ελληνική ή αγγλική γλώσσα θα συμπεριλαμβάνει ποιήματα, διηγήματα, στοχασμούς, μελέτες, δοκίμια, βιβλιοκριτικές, κλπ. Τα έργα που θα υποβληθούν να είναι αυθεντικά, να μην έχουν δημοσιευτεί ή προωθηθεί σε άλλους φορείς, να είναι διορθωμένα και στην τελική τους μορφή.

PERIODICAL ANTIPODES, ISSUE 70/2024

The 70th issue of the bilingual literary periodical Antipodes will be launched οn Sunday 20th October 2024.

This year the periodical is dedicated to Cyprus. This special issue will incorporate many aspects of the island of Aphrodite which will attest to the uniqueness and endurance of the Cypriot people over the centuries.

50 years have passed since the island’s illegal invasion and its continuous unjustified occupation thus generating ongoing discourse for the eventual solution of this unresolved problem.

As usual, this issue of the periodical will publish works submitted by our members or non-members such as poems, short stories, studies, essays, book reviews and οther literary works, in Greek and English and the Visual Arts.

Works to be submitted for publication must be original works that have not been published or promoted in another publication and must be the final copy of the submission. Literary works should be no longer than the limits prescribed as follows: Poems: 100 verses (lines), short stories and essays; 2000 words, studies: 2000 words, book reviews and other reviews (exhibitions, music, plays, films): 1000 words. Works that exceed the specified size limits will be rejected, without involving the Editorial Committee.

The deadline for submitting contributions is Friday 21st June 2024.

14η Ετήσια ‘Εκθεση Τέχνης: Antipodean Palette 2024

Πρόσκληση συμμετοχής

Ο Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος βρίσκεται στην ευχάριστη θέση να ανακοινώσει ότι φέτος η Ετήσια Έκθεση Τέχνης Antipodean Palette θα γίνει στις 10-21 Ιουλίου και προσκαλεί τους καλλιτέχνες της παροικίας να δηλώσουν το ενδιαφέρον τους για συμμετοχή. Στόχος της έκθεσης είναι η ανάδειξη και προβολή των εικαστικών τεχνών στην ελληνική παροικία και όχι μόνο.

Η έκθεση θα γίνει στην γκαλερί Steps, 62 Lygon Street, Carlton. Οι ώρες λειτουργίας θα είναι 10 πμ – 5.00 μμ τις καθημερινές και 11πμ – 3μμ Σάββατο και Κυριακή.

Τώρα, στο 14 έτος της, η έκθεση «Antipodean Palette» έχει αναδειχθεί σε κορυφαία εκδήλωση του Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανού Πολιτιστικού Συνδέσμου και ένα σημαντικό βήμα για να παρουσιασθούν και συζητηθούν έργα που πηγάζουν μέσα από την πολυπολιτισμική κοινωνία της Αυστραλίας.

ΥΠΟΒΟΛΗ ΣΥΜΜΕΤΟΧΗΣ

O Ελληνο-Αυστραλιανός Πολιτιστικός Σύνδεσμος (Αναγνωρισμένο Σωματείο και βραβευμένο με το Meritorious Community Service Award από την τοπική Κυβέρνηση το 2007) ιδρύθηκε το 1970 και είναι ένας αφιλοκερδής οργανισμός. Οι σκοποί του είναι η προαγωγή, υποστήριξη και διασπείρωση του δημιουργικού έργου Ελληνο-Αυστραλών Καλλιτεχνών και Λογοτεχνών που η δουλειά τους κυρίως αντανακλά τον συγκερασμό του ελληνικού και του αυστραλιανού πολιτισμού και συμβάλλει στον εμπλουτισμό της λογοτεχνίας, των εικαστικών και ερμηνευτικών τεχνών.

Pavlos Andronikos

In the beginning I was a keen SLR photographer. Over the years I watched with interest as computers became more and more sophisticated, and was intrigued from my very first Mac Plus by the possibilities the new technology was opening up. I enjoyed playing around with the (now-primitive) Mac Plus graphics programmes.

I forget exactly how it happened, but, for one of the editions of Antipodes which I edited, I had no drawings from Nikos Kypraios and so I resorted to my Mac Plus and created drawings on it for the magazine. (See Antipodes no. 25/26, Dec. 1989.)

Over time the capabilities of computers grew until it became possible to go beyond crude line and dot drawings to full colour pictures, and photographs manipulated with such precision that the manipulation is undetectable. One could blend many photographs to create pictures of imaginary scenes, and integrate that with graphic-art creations, themselves often digital. This was a dream come true.

I coined the term “photo-graphics” for this new art form with its endless possibilities, and it is the field I work in, in addition to straight photography.
My output ranges from photographs—sometimes digitally enhanced—to digitally created “paintings”, and everything in between.

Soula Mantalvanos

Soula is an artist and designer based in Melbourne, Australia.

Soula has a great love for both design and the visual arts. Beginning her professional career as creative director of ooi.com.au, a design company she owns together with her husband Theo, Soula also had the opportunity to exhibit her fine art paintings and prints at various Melbourne galleries.

Soula explores different bodies of work through many mediums, initially beginning by sketching before progressing works in acrylics and oils, various printmaking forms and egg tempera where subject matter permits.

Through whimsical characters, building facades and/or streetscapes, Soula’s subjects reflect her cultural heritage, travel, and personal life experiences – one of which is living with chronic pain.

A sea change from Melbourne now sees Soula Co Directing Queenscliff Gallery (QG) with her husband Theo on the Bellarine Peninsula. Soula more broadly applies her fine art and design experience by curating exhibitions and managing QG’s brand and identity.

Soula is represented by QG, housed in an 1868 Wesleyan church space. Her work is available at both the QG and The Convent Daylesford.

Katrina Ginis

Katrina Ginis is a visual artist currently residing in Melbourne. With a parental background from both the Peloponese and Mytilene, her original heritage stems from Asia Minor.

Painting, drawing and the visual arts in their many and varied manifestations have been a source of fascination and an integral part of Katrina’s identity. Her personal aesthetic is predominantly figurative and representational and her practice largely centres around painting and drawing, working with oil, acrylic, watercolour, pencil and pastel.

She regards her creative practice as a means of self-expression which enables her to engage with and explore the beauty and complexity of existence. Her creative work is informed by her cultural heritage and her research as a scholar of Psychology. She finds great inspiration in Greek art, iconography, history, philosophy, literature, and mythology.

In 2012, Katrina was shortlisted for Top Arts and attained a perfect score of 50 and a Premier’s Award for her secondary school studies in Art.
She was a finalist in the 2015 Manning Art Prize, finalist in the 2020 National Capital Art Prize and awarded the Tolarno Hotel’s annual acquisitive prize for 2015.

Katrina has presented at visual art related conferences at Melbourne’s Monash University and at The Unviversity of Melboune’s ‘Women, Art and Feminism in Australia since 1970 Symposium’. She has completed private commissions for original works, portraits and freelance illustrative projects and has exhibited works at various galleries including The Manning Regional Gallery, Gallery Voltaire, The Black Cat Gallery and Linden Gallery.

Tina Sideris

Love of the visual arts especially colour and pattern, inspired by both ethereal and earthly beauty has always captivated me.

My yearning to interpret the external world and my internal world , through the visual medium, is what gives me joy. It also helps me make sense of life’s journey. By drawing on my life, including my upbringing (family), my schooling, my travels, my daughters and husband, I am never at a loss for inspiration, for subject matter. It is also these very relationships and experiences that drive my desire to visually capture those reflections.

Thematically I take inspiration from these influences and the myths and legends of my heritage. Here I draw on the power and allure of the ancient goddesses and see these elements in all women today: by reflecting on the past, my art keeps me firmly rooted in the present.

My love of Matisse’s odalisques, religious iconography and Japanese woodblocks have all inspired how I approach my subject matter. Their serenity and stillness in a moment of contemplation and reflection (however fleeting that moment is). I like how they capture the transcendental in the ordinary.

The artform of pyrography allows me to celebrate a simple decorative style, letting the lines and colours work alongside the natural surface of the wood (something of the earth and so earthly) to tranquilly co-exist. I enjoy the interchange between materials and techniques, including, the egg tempera technique and the gilded glass technique of ‘verre eglomise’ that was predominant during the Renaissance period. My studio practice is continually evolving and I enjoyed my most recent intersection between the manual and digital mediums. The product a hybrid of analogue and digital montages, that so closely paralleled our world as we are living it today.

My art is simultaneously decorative, serene, sensual and grounded.

My plans are to extend my subject matter further into the realms of the imagination and to organically allow the interchange between materials and techniques and to allow myself to escape in the process and learn from where this journey takes me. Every stage illuminating the way. I find beauty and mystery in all aspects of life and that is why I pursue this enigmatic path and build on the mystery of storytelling.
